There are great concerns related to health and environmental risks, land application of unprocessed sludge and biosolids. Access to incineration facilities is limited in most jurisdictions. In Ontario, the length of time and expense to obtain regulatory permits and approvals would effectively prevent this application from being implemented in future. Landfill disposal of processed biosolids is an increasingly expensive option and is not a viable long-term biosolids management solution.
